Throwing the Football
Gripping the Ball
When gripping the football,
make sure you have a firm
grip with the upper knuckle
resting at the end of the
threads with your throwing
hand and your other hand
comfortably cupped around
the football. The index
finger should extend towards
the end of the football. The
upper knuckles of the middle
fingers should be positioned
near the top of the threads.
There should be a
comfortable amount of
separation between the
middle and index finger, and
the index should be the last
finger to leave the football
when throwing.
Positioning to Throw
The elbow should be
positioned slightly above
the shoulders at an angle of
less than 90 degrees. When
the quarterback is about to
throw, he should remember to
lead with his elbow. The
opposite arm should be
positioned down and back.
The elbow of the throwing
arm should also lead,
pointing toward the target
with the wrist uncoiled. He
should release the ball at
the top of the throwing
motion with by driving the
arm down and through,
following through with the
arm ending inside of the
thigh area. The motion
should take the
quarterback's arm across his
body, from shoulder to
shoulder and number to
number.
Stepping and Throwing
When throwing, it is
necessary for the
quarterback to keep his feet
and eyes moving. He should
step and point his toe at
the target to help with
accuracy and push off the
back foot for extra power.
During the throwing motion,
the quarterback should
transfer his weight from his
back to his front foot and
the back foot should come
off the ground and move
slightly forward, naturally.
He should also open his hips
and keep a slight flex in
the knees.
