Catching the Ball
The basic position that is
taught for catching a
football is to catch the
ball at the numbers with
thumbs and index fingers
touching. The hands form a
cone enabling the receiver
to catch a higher percent of
their passes.
Wide receivers should get
off the line quickly, move
the defensive backs to a
desired area, turn and form
a pocket for catching the
ball. For catches made while
running down the sideline,
ideally the receiver
positions himself so that he
can make an over-the
shoulder catch with hands in
the same pocket formation.
The most basic rule in
catching any pass, however,
is that the catch is made
with the hands and then
brought into the torso. A
receiver who uses his body
to help stop a pass will
watch it bounce away more
often than not.
